GoReady Insurance Choice
The April Travel Protection Choice plan we used did provide the comprehensive coverage we sought. The only problem was with filing the claim. The insurance company provided little support in this effort and basically placed all the obligation for documentation upon us. And it took over three months for them to process and pay our claim. Other than that I am generally pleased with the plan.

My wife purchased this plan when arranging for our trip to New Zealand. On the trip, the unthinkable happened: she became ill and died of pneumonia despite prompt, aggressive, excellent medical care. Procedures included air transfers by helicopter and airplane, and brief stays in 2 ICUs. April didn't always answer their phone promptly, and weren't much help while I was in New Zealand, but none was needed as we were well taken care of by the medical system and by Overseas Adventure Tours. On return, I initially thought they would pay the bills as they came in, but the policy clearly states that they reimburse for what I pay. After we straightened that out, I paid the bills, with a couple calls to NZ needed to prod the billing offices, and I submitted the receipts and credit card statements as requested. Review took longer than I thought it should, and communications from them were sometimes delayed and cryptic. But what counts is that in the end, they paid every penny of every bill without a hassle beyond getting the paperwork done. I give them full credit for being careful, thorough, and doing what they said they would do.

I had a medical emergency. I called April Travel Insurance to find out where to go. The initial call took forever, I believe almost 25 min. The girl processing my call was VERY slow and ask me for every travel detail that was listed on my policy. She finally directed me to go to an Urgent Care 20 minutes from my hotel, which at the time I did not know the distance. Since I did not have a car, I had to take a taxi. When I arrived at the Urgent Care, I learned that it was closed for the day, so my taxi driver found an Urgent Care 1 block from my hotel. I incurred a $50 taxi expense, which April Travel refused to pay, even though it was their incompetency that led to such a ridiculous and unnecessary expense. I will never use this company again. I guess you get what you pay for. The cheapest = poor and incompetent service!

    Thank you for your feedback on the policy. April Travel Protection has issued the following reply:

    "We are saddened to hear of this client’s Assistance case. APRIL prides itself in providing exceptional Customer and Assistance services to all policyholders. It appears that the business hours provided by our network of providers for the 2015 holidays was inaccurate and led to this unfortunate scenario the same day of the client’s departure to their covered trip. The reimbursement of the taxi expense was provided by APRIL and the check was cashed by the client on May 2, 2016.

    We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. We hope to have you as a returning customer in the near future."

      Zac, On March 31st I requested a review of my claim. On May 2nd I received and cashed the reimbursement check for the denied taxi charge. The check came with NO explanation. The very next day I received, via email, this response from the claims department:

      "Dear Ms. Lockwood,

      As the claims administrator for American Modern Home Insurance Company, we received your appeal in our office on March 31st 2016, relating to your Trip Medical claims. We have reviewed the facts related to your loss and have determined that our original position of your claim must stand.

      The Taxi cost is not a covered benefit under the Accident or Sickness Medical Expense benefit regardless of the circumstances. Please refer to your policy for valid benefits...."

      So even though they ended up paying the claim in full, I highly doubt I would ever deal with this company again.
