Had to cancel trip due to jury duty and the claim was handled promptly without the unnecessary back and forth and resending of stuff that I experienced with a different company a few years back.

I sent one email with attached documentation; they contacted me after a week or so by phone and email to request a receipt I had not included. I sent that and when I emailed for follow-up after around 2 weeks, they phoned to tell me the check had already been mailed. From the time I contacted them for the forms to the day I received a check was exactly 1 month.

The only suggestion I would have for them is to provide a link for claimants to access the forms online. You have to email them for the forms and that takes about a week. Not a huge deal but would be nice. Would definitely use them again.

Well, we had one segment of one traveler(out of 4) with trip interruption due to a funeral. Because this deceased person did not meet their criteria, it was denied. All $71.00 of it, which was all that was asked for. That is ridiculous and I will not recommend them to anyone.

Thank you for your feedback on your policy. We are very sorry to learn that one of the travelers had to interrupt their trip due to the death of a loved one. We understand that it is never pleasant to receive a denial for reimbursement under the Trip Interruption coverage. However, your reason to interrupt your trip must be specifically stated as a covered reason in the policy.

According to your policy they will cover a death of a non-traveling Family Member. The way that Family Member is defined, according to the certificate, is as follows:

"Family Member means Your or a Traveling Companion's legal or common law spouse, ex-spouse, parent, legal guardian, step-parent, grandparent, parents-in-law, grandchild, natural or adopted child, step-child, children-in-law, brother, sister, step-brother, step-sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew who reside in the United States, Canada or Mexico."

We travel regularly and had to file a claim with another company in the past. That company dragged their feet unbelievably.
By comparison, Nationwide was fabulous; prompt, efficient, highly recommended!

Very pleased with how attentive Nationwide was to our claim when our trip to New England had to be shortened due to a family emergency. They did not question nor ask for any additional documentation and sent us reimbursement checks relatively quickly.

We've been buying trip insurance for over 10 years as we go to the beach during hurricane season. This is the first time we've had to file a claim. The claim process was fairly painless - we filled out one form and submitted the required proof of payment, and received our check within 20 days.

When you are putting thousands of dollars of deposits on a vacation rental house months in advance, trip insurance is a must-have.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Essential
My husband and I have elderly parents who have medical issues, so when we travel, we always purchase insurance within 2 weeks of booking to cover their pre-existing conditions. The last 3 or 4 trips we purchased insurance through Nationwide, as their plan offered the best coverage for our needs.
In our approx. 10 years of purchasing such insurance, we used it for the first time this past September when we had to file a claim not for our parents medical problems, but for my younger sister. She was diagnosed with a life altering serious illness on the day before we were set to depart. Everyone in my family was an emotional mess, and I just couldn't leave at that point to go on a carefree tropical vacation.
I called Nationwide that day and explained the situation, and they emailed me all the forms I needed to complete the same day. It took me approximately 2 hours to complete the forms and gather all the necessary paperwork and receipts that I needed. I also had to get a signature from my sister's doctor, stating that she was ill and the code for the illness, which the office personnel was quick to provide.
All the paperwork was submitted to Nationwide on Sept. 28th, and I received my check today on Oct. 11th for the entire amount I lost. I cannot recommend this company more highly. This one claim probably more than covered all the insurance we paid for and never needed to use over the years.
Life happens, I never thought I would be canceling a vacation for my always healthy and strong sister, rather than our parents. You just never know.
Getting the claim settled with no hassel made a difficult time a little less stressful. I will always purchase trip insurance!

Two months before our trip my wife came down with a very serious and rare bacterial infection that prevented us from taking the trip. When we cancelled with the trip company we knew we would lose more than half the cost per their policies. I have bought trip insurance in the past but never had to use it and was unsure as to how much I would have to fight with the insurance company to collect the money we lost with the trip company. Well to my suprise, when I called Nationwide (and actually talked to a human representative) she was very friendly and walked me through the application process. I submitted all the paper work and called a week later to make sure they got it. I could not believe it when they told me that they had recieved my application and that it had been approved and the check was in the mail.

Unsure at this point as to whether I would recommend plan or not--we'll see how they handle our claim; weather canceled our fight and the next available flight w/ seats was 24 hrs. later; because other flights left the airport later in the day, the airport was classified as not being "closed" and thus trip interruption was not declared--only trip delay. I was, and still am hoping that the first night's lodging at our destination which was pre-paid would be covered, but apparently only a new room at the delayed location is considered a covered, reimbursable expense. As we went back home, Nationwide is claiming no coverage for the night's lodging of our "delay" that we had pre-paid. I understand the legalese of contract terms, but it seems to me that trip insurance is taken out to protect the pre-paid expenses. We'll see if they will cover the dinner we had out as we had no food in the house. Fortunately, the other plans we had for the day/night we couldn't get to our destination were either rescheduled for the next day, or cancelled without penalty. I shudder to think based upon what Nationwide told me about our lodging, what might have happened if we had decided to go to one of the newer high-end restaurants that insist upon pre-payment in advance and no refunds if you don't show for the meal.

Thank you for your feedback on the policy.

Unfortunately, your claim did not fall under the terms and conditions of the Trip Interruption benefit, and as a result the pre-paid expenses could not be reimbursed. However, the maximum Travel Delay benefit was paid to reimburse the.reasonable additional expenses.
