Nationwide Mutual Insurance Essential
How good is Nationwide? For me, it's excellent. While pressing the right buttons on the website and selecting a company and policy that fits you is important, filing a claim is what really counts. My wife and I are retired and take three to four big trips annually and always get insurance. In the summer of 2014, we planned a ten day trip to Maui and a Caribbean cruise for the fall. We then lived everyone's nightmare. On Sept 18th of 2014, our 38 year old daughter, who is a single parent that lives near us, was diagnosed with breast cancer. We knew all trips were off and our role as a parent and grandparent was greatly expanded. We were concerned with filing two claims and getting reimbursed. I filled out the paperwork with the doctors statement, visa statement, airline statements and turned in the first claim. It's important when filing a claim to think of the person who will handle it for Nationwide. Unfortunately, there are dishonest people out there who will try to commit insurance fraud. Thus I knew I needed to be complete. A week later I submitted the second claim. I was told it would take 2-3 weeks for the claim. At three weeks I sent Nationwide an email. Then ended up taking almost four weeks for the check. The reason was that both claims were combined. That was logical. Bottom line - I received checks for all my losses. Not having to fight with an insurance company was great, I don't know if I would have had the energy.

The flight after a cruise was cancelled due to bad weather, and we got home a day late. As a result, we had a night in a hotel and four meals. We submitted the claim and the claim was approved and paid promptly.

Our original flight to Florida was canceled due to the air traffic controller person who started the fire in Illinois in September and it didn't look like we would be able to make it there in time for our cruise. I called to see if we were covered and I was told that this was not one of the covered reasons. What good is insurance if it doesn't cover unforeseen events that are beyond my control? I asked to speak with a supervisor and was transferred to a voice mail. I asked for a return phone call which never came. As it turned out we made a last minute flight the next day and arrived at the ship one hour before departure. I did loose the cost of the hotel for one night and I had to pay a cab $100 to get us to the port on time instead of $30 for a shuttle that would have taken too long. The insurance sounds good but the company looks for any way to get out of paying. The outstanding folks at InsuremyTrip contacted me and helped with the above issue. I received a check today to cover the missed hotel room. The reason I selected Nationwide Mutual was because it was a recognized name, because the cost was slightly better than the competition and they offered significantly higher medical coverage which would be helpful if something serious happened. I will not book another insurance policy outside of InsureMyTrip. They provided excellent customer service.

I had an unexpected opportunity to check out the claim service, thanks to a winter storm-induced air travel delay. Filing the claim was convenient, since documentation can be submitted via email. The settlement check arrived a week later. My only quibble is that I didn't receive any update on the status of my claim before I received the check - I'd received an initial response to my filing, advising me to allow up to 15 business days for review, so I was expecting to have to wait a while longer to find out if I needed to submit more supporting material. (My only other experience with filing a claim on travel insurance, with another company in connection with the Icelandic volcanic eruption, had led me to anticipate the possibility of a much less satisfactory and businesslike interaction. I finally succeeded in extracting payment from that firm, after a few months and numerous phone calls.)

Bottom line: This policy seems like a good value, if the potential for arbitrary exclusion of legit medical claims doesn't bother or apply to you; and at least for a minor claim (amounting in my case to little more than the initial cost of the policy), I received speedy and straightforward claims processing service.

I bought this policy primarily because it was the least expensive package policy with an acceptable level of international medical coverage, plus it offered decent trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage. I almost bypassed it because it has a ridiculously broad exclusion on medical claims stemming from exposure to "biological substances" (suggesting that treatment of common ailments such as infections might not be covered), but a deep dive into the fine print revealed that this limitation doesn't apply in the state where I reside. It would have been nice if the IMT customer care rep with whom I discussed my concerns had pointed that out.

We had to make a claim due to my husband experiencing a traumatic injury about 2 months before our anniversary trip. Due to his inability to travel during our trip time, we made a claim and received a full refund. We had to fill out the required paperwork, but there were no questions asked, and we received our claim quickly. Such a relief to be covered for something like this and for it to be fairly easy to make a claim while we were dealing with a traumatic injury.

I had to cancel because I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Once the insurance company was notified the paper work went without a hitch. The team at the insurance company was giving updates to help me along. Very well pleased.

I must admit I was very skeptical purchasing this insurance due to the low cost. Unfortunately over Christmas just 4 weeks or so before our trip I ended up having a medical issue which landed me in the hospital for a week, and grounded me from flying. Reluctantly I filed a claim figuring I would never see any $$. Well I stand highly corrected! I received in the mail today a check for the entire amount I lost. TruTravel, you have got my business from this point on; you made a very low part of my life much brighter and easier! Thank You!!
