You never really know how good your travel insurance is unless you have to file a claim. Our family traveled to London in April of 2016. On the return trip (London to Vancouver BC, then on to Portland Oregon), our 17 year old son became ill. He was so sick that he had to be taken off the plane by paramedics in Vancouver BC and be transported to the hospital for treatment. Of course that also meant we missed our connecting flight, so we had to stay in a hotel that night after he was released from the hospital. I submitted the $975 hospital bill and $189 hotel bill (both of which we paid by credit card) on the Saturday after we finally made it home. I received text updates on my claim throughout the week, and received checks for both claims exactly one week after filing. It was a difficult situation, but our son is now healthy again and AIG provided stellar service!

The time between when I submitted my claim to when I received a check was about 7 weeks, way to long!! I was asked for receipts, some which I did not save so only got reimburised for the couple small receipts I could find. Keeping all, I mean all was never mentioned when the plan was explained to me at time of purchase. Will shop around next trip I take overseas.

I did have to cancel my trip on a Caribbean cruise as my husband and I are undergoing fertility treatment. Based on the recommendations of the CDC and WHO, along with my own physician, we did not travel due to the Zika virus. The cruise lines and airlines themselves recognize that this is a unique situation and have taken steps to accommodate passengers in our situation. The airlines even going as far as fully refunding flights for pregnant or soon to be pregnant passengers flying directly to any affected country in full. In our case we we're flying to Florida for a cruise so we were not able to receive a refund. Believing that I had travel insurance for medical issues, I contacted the travel insurance company to file a claim. They told me that the possibility of contracting an illness was not covered under any plan, but that I would have coverage for it should I get sick while on the trip.

I was very disappointed. While I can understand to the general reasoning behind this policy, this was a unique situation where the governments of many countries were telling their citizens not to travel to a specific area for very serious reasons. We booked the trio before the advisory came out and I think every strongly that the travel companies should have been more helpful. Many at risk people were forced to make a health ca financial decision that they shouldn't have had to make. Luckily I was persistent in my own regard and came to a reasonable compromise with the cruise and air lines directly.

This was my first time purchasing insurance and I would be hesitant to do so again.

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. We are sorry to learn that you are disappointed with your experience. We recommend taking the time to read the Zika Virus and Travel Insurance Coverage article written by InsureMyTrip:

    https://www.insuremytrip.com/learn/travel-tips/zika-virus-travel-insurance-coverage.html

AIG Travel Guard has issued the following response:

"Some customers traveling to Central and South America have expressed concerns regarding a recent outbreak of the Zika virus. AIG has sent out a statement that as a general matter, under our US policies:

    - Trip Cancellation for concern or fear of travel associated with sickness, epidemic, or pandemic is not covered.

    - A customer who contracts Zika before traveling, but after purchase of the policy, could be covered for Trip Cancellation benefits.

    - Customers with Cancel For Any Reason coverage could be entitled to a percentage of their loss, depending on the level of CFAR coverage purchased (usually 50%, but can be up to 75%).

    - A customer who contracts Zika while on a covered trip, could be covered for Medical and Trip Interruption/Curtailment benefits if there is a confirmed diagnosis.

We are happy to clarify any matters related to Zika and travel insurance coverage at 1.800.826.1300. Thanks!"

The trip included a
tour

InsureMyTrip web site was very easy to use and allowed us to pick the insurance policy that covered our tour to Israel at an economical price. After reviewing multiple carriers, we decided on AIG based on price, good coverage, and previous customers’ rating of them.

Unfortunately, about 2-1/2 weeks prior to our departure, my wife suffered a bad fall causing blunt force trauma to her back. Although we were hopeful she would recover in time to make the trip, she was unable to recover sufficiently to make the long flight and endure the physical demands of the 10-day tour. So four days prior to our departure we cancelled our trip. This cost us the full price of the tour.

We called AIG Claims Service, and the agent was very sympathetic and helpful. After a short interview she emailed us the proper forms, which we filled out with the help of the doctor and emailed them back to the claims department.

In a few days I got a call back from our case worker at AIG, and she indicated that our claim was accepted and that we would be receiving our check within a few days. From the time I emailed my claim until the time I received my check was about 7 days.

Based on our experience, I would highly recommend AIG for trip insurance and would certainly use them again in the future.

Unfortunately, I had to use my travel insurance for a death in my family. AIG made it a very easy process during a very difficult time.

The plan had excellent coverage and gave us peace of mind to relax and enjoy our trip. While on the trip, I dropped my prescription sunglasses in the surf and was unable to retrieve them. Upon return, I filed a claim. After a week I received a courteous letter response explaining that eyeglasses and sunglasses are excluded, which I was able to verify by going back through the policy.

I should have received $848 back for canceling and only received $408. This feels very wrong!

It was really painful to file a claim through their website. The site kept timing out, my in-progress claims wouldn't show up, pages would get stuck etc. However, somehow I was able to file a claim after which it was processed quickly and satisfactorily. They just need to work on their technical problems.

AIG rejected my claim for travel insurance for our cancelled trip to Italy due to a back problem. I was given different reasons for my rejection and it took 10 months to get my final rejection. I talked with 8 different AIG Travel staff including the President of the company. There were several delays in responses every step of the way in my appeal. Misinformation was given to the NYS Dept. of Finance by AIG. My treatment was unethical and I would never recommend this company to anyone.

Total waste of $150. Insurance covered nothing when I filed a claim. They said it was a pre-existing condition. The traveler was not sick when tickets were bought, but got a UTI after. will not use this company again.

Thank you for providing your review. Many travelers believe that a preexisting condition indicates that the individual is actually "sick" with that condition prior to purchasing the policy. The preexisting condition exclusion simply tells you that there is no coverage for ANY medical condition, no matter how minor, if that medical condition is referenced in your medical records as receiving treatment or a recommendation for treatment within the look-back period. Treatment may mean a new prescription, a change in prescription or a diagnostic test, even if that test came out as "negative". It would also include symptoms that would have caused a prudent person to seek treatment.

We are sure that you will all agree that this is a very broad definition that would include most medical conditions. However, keep in mind that the look-back period under the Comprehensive plans is only from 60 to 180 days (depending on plan) prior to the policy's effective date, and that the waiver of that exclusion is available in most plans. Unfortunately the AIG Travel Guard Basic plan has no option to purchase the waiver and does have a 180 day look-back period. Nevertheless, you purchased this plan on 10/09/2015 which was within 7 days of your Initial Trip Payment so had you purchased the AIG Travel Guard Silver, Gold or even Platinum plan, you could have had coverage for that condition.

In the future, please give us a call at 800-487-4722 for competitive quotes so that we can review the coverage.
